What Jonny Evans did to prepare for Kath Phipps's funeral, Ugarte's message for autograph hunters and expect a signing (sort of) this week
PLUS: The lack of training pictures under Amorim explained
A few of us in the press pack were invited to the funeral of Kath Phipps at Manchester Cathedral on Monday afternoon. Before I had even got there, I bumped into familiar faces outside Sinclair’s Oyster Bar who used to work for United. Phil Townsend, now the Uefa communications director, and Kate Lowe, who left the club last year, were both walking towards the venue.
400 guests attended through the front and rear entrances. David Beckham, his mother Sandra, father Ted and his second wife, Hilary, were among the notable early arrivals.
The 1993-94 double-winning side was only Paul Ince, Andrei Kanchelskis and Eric Cantona shy of a full XI. Schmeichel, Parker, Bruce, Pallister, Irwin, Keane, Giggs and Hughes took their seats. Cantona was filming abroad.
Brian Kidd, the assistant manager of that great side, conversed with Giggs and Paul Scholes. Schmeichel, still repenting for his cartwheel during the final derby at Maine Road in City colours, wore a club tie.
Kidd scored the third goal in the 1968 European Cup final win at Wembley. A few months later, Kath started working at United. A player from each decade Kath worked at the club was in attendance: Lou Macari, Bryan Robson, the Class of 92, 2008 European Cup winner Michael Carrick, Marcus Rashford and right up to the current squad.
