99 premiere glamour, inside Old Trafford leaks and Selhurst strife
Another week of drama at Manchester United including embarrassment on and off the pitch, but a nostalgic look at past glories could inform a brighter future
The “99” premiere last week was attended by familiar faces of a United persuasion past and present. Sir Alex Ferguson and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were on the original guest list but withdrew on the eve of the event at the Printworks.
Ferguson had not been at Old Trafford for a number of weeks but was in attendance for the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. Some fans had noted his recent absence and were understandably concerned, so it was reassuring to see him arrive at the stadium on Sunday.
Solskjaer contributes an original interview to the three-part documentary but has spoken about the Treble ad nauseam, so he is not one of the more engaging interviewees.
Steve McClaren, who conducted his chat for the documentary in the coaches’ office at Carrington, is one of the standout contributors. Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole are good value and so is Jesper Blomqvist, who elaborates on the psychological issues he encountered after moving to United. David May is quite candid, too…
